十和田八幡平国立公園、秋田県と岩手県の県境に位置する乳頭温泉郷。鶴の湯、黒湯温泉、妙乃湯など七湯から成り、異なる泉質を湯巡りで楽しめる日本屈指の温泉地として知られています。江戸時代より湯治場として発展し、今なおその文化が色濃く残されています。

孫六温泉は明治35年開湯、旅館としては明治39年に創業した歴史ある一軒宿。乳頭温泉郷の中でも最も奥に位置し、かつては徒歩でしか辿り着けなかった秘湯です。乳頭温泉郷で最も鄙びた宿とも称された宿は2022年、高齢化と後継者不足により一時休業となりました。

その後地元企業が承継し、2025年孫六温泉 六庵として復活しました。当時の趣を残しつつ伝統的な湯治宿は現代的な快適性と静けさを兼ね備えた大人の空間に。大自然に囲まれた環境は日常から切り離された感覚をより一層際立たせてくれます。

湯治場の雰囲気を残した「唐子の湯」と足元湧出の「石の湯」。硫黄の香りがふわりと立ち上る湯は柔らかく、肌にすっと馴染む湯ざわり。身体の芯まで温まる心地よい湯。更に大自然を望む露天風呂が併設されています。

またバレルサウナも楽しむことができ、樹々の香りに包まれながらじっくりと身体を温めた後、キンキンに冷えた水風呂で整え外気浴で渓流の空気を感じる時間は格別の体験。

食事は地元の食材を中心に構成された滋味深い献立。ライブキッチンで提供される山の恵みを丁寧に仕立てた贅沢な料理は湯治宿で味わう非日常を感じさせてくれます。

冬のアクセスは決して良いとは言えません。しかし雪の小道を歩いていく時間もまたこちらの魅力の一つと感じました。

I recently stayed at Magoroku Onsen Roku-an, located within the Nyuto Onsenkyo hot spring village in Semboku City, Akita Prefecture.

Situated within Towada-Hachimantai National Park, right along the border between Akita and Iwate Prefectures, lies Nyuto Onsenkyo. Comprising seven distinct hot springs—including Tsuru-no-Yu, Kuro-yu, and Tae-no-Yu—it is renowned as one of Japan’s premier hot spring destinations, allowing visitors to enjoy a “hot spring pilgrimage” and experience a variety of unique water qualities. Having flourished as a therapeutic hot spring retreat since the Edo period, the village retains a rich and vibrant sense of that historical culture to this day.

Magoroku Onsen is a historic, standalone inn; its hot springs were first tapped in 1902 (Meiji 35), and it began operating as an inn in 1906 (Meiji 39). Located in the innermost reaches of Nyuto Onsenkyo, it was once considered a “secret hot spring” (hitou) accessible only on foot. Once celebrated as the most rustic and secluded inn in the entire Nyuto Onsenkyo area, the establishment temporarily suspended operations in 2022 due to the aging of its staff and a lack of successors.

Subsequently, a local enterprise took over the business, and in 2025, it was reborn as “Magoroku Onsen Roku-an.” While preserving its original charm and the traditions of a therapeutic hot spring retreat, the inn has been transformed into a sophisticated space for adults that seamlessly blends modern comfort with serene tranquility. Surrounded by the grandeur of the natural world, the setting serves to further heighten the sense of being completely detached from the routines of daily life.

The facility features “Karako-no-Yu,” a bath that retains the authentic atmosphere of a traditional therapeutic retreat, and “Ishi-no-Yu,” a bath where the hot spring water bubbles up directly from the bedrock beneath one’s feet. The water—from which the gentle scent of sulfur wafts into the air—is soft to the touch, gliding smoothly over the skin. It is a truly soothing soak that warms the body to its very core. Additionally, an open-air bath offering panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness is available for guests to enjoy.

Guests can also indulge in the barrel sauna experience. After slowly warming the body while enveloped in the natural fragrance of the surrounding trees, the ritual of plunging into an ice-cold water bath to “reset” (totonou) and then stepping outside to breathe in the crisp air of the mountain stream valley offers a truly exceptional and invigorating experience.

The dining experience features a deeply flavorful menu crafted primarily from locally sourced ingredients. Prepared with meticulous care in a “live kitchen” setting, these luxurious dishes—showcasing the bounty of the mountains—evoke a sense of the extraordinary, a unique pleasure to be savored within the context of a traditional therapeutic hot spring retreat.

Access to the inn during the winter months cannot exactly be described as convenient. However, I felt that the very act of walking along the snow-covered paths to reach the destination was, in itself, one of the most charming aspects of this unique retreat. Magoroku Onsen Roku-an offers a harmonious blend of history, the traditional culture of therapeutic hot spring inns, and the comforts of a modern stay. We look forward to seeing it emerge as a new landmark within the Nyuto Onsenkyo area, and we offer it our full support.
